2nd year apprentices excel at theory training

apprenticeship scheme

Caxton Builders second year apprentices attended a training session at Caxton Group’s Derby branch. The theory training was attended by Harry Prew, Harvey Campling, Jack Stride, Kitchner Godsmark, Danny Wood and Sean Price.

Lead by Ivan Sharpe, Construction Manager and Apprentice Team Lead, the training kicked off with a quiz to see what the team of apprentices had learnt so far at college and on site during the past 18 months. Ivan commented, “The team enjoyed this a lot, there were no winners or losers and we agreed to make this a regular part off our ongoing theory training. This gives me an insight into what they have learnt and any skills gaps to allow me to organise any future training required.”

The team then moved on to learning to set out brickwork walls on site, from grid lines, reading drawings and calculating setting out from fixed points, concrete and steel frame buildings. Ivan explains, “This element is really important in their development and isn’t taught in the curriculum at any college. This is a team exercise where we all together to work out how to read the drawing, work out the important information and then install the setting out.”

“The second session consists of a series of four written tests which get progressively harder to really test their knowledge. This enables us to see if each person has understood the training and created a little natural competition between them which kicks off some fun banter.”

Ian Knight, Caxton Builders Commercial Director added, “Our apprenticeship scheme is a key part of our business as we develop and invest in young people in our community. We are proud to work with so many talented individuals, many who will go on to play an integral part in the future growth of Caxton Group.”
