At Caxton Façades, we’ve been working with clients to transform buildings for the last decade – and the  the success story of EdCity is one we’re particularly proud of.

Teaming up with main contractor, Bowmer + Kirkland (B+K), Stofix UK and architects, tp bennett, we brought our technical expertise and forward-thinking approach to create something truly remarkable at West London’s EdCity.

Grey rustic/handmade appearance brick

tp bennett’s vision called for a grey rustic/handmade appearance brick that was in keeping with the surrounding developments. A striking white detail band course was essential to complement the concrete banding on neighbouring buildings.  tp bennett’s Project Director Chris Ansell commented, “Stofix were very proactive, engaged and supportive in helping us to specify a brick and mortar which was in line with the design concept and was compatible with their system. This is a landmark project in the commercial office sector to be clad with brick slips with a contemporary and elegant aesthetic. The detailing and depth of relief on the façade is well resolved and gives a good overall appearance”.

Read on to explore the contributing factors behind the success of EdCity, as we caught up with Caxton Facades Operations Director, Scott Millington.

Precision perfect planning to overcome logistics hurdles

“London sites will always present logistical challenges, but we take a proactive approach in mitigating them. Our large storage facility location in the centre of the UK, puts us in an advantageous position – we have full control of where and when materials are sent.

We also held daily planning sessions with our partners at Stofix. This allowed us to create a seamless delivery system. “Just-in-time” deliveries minimised delays and on-site congestion, and materials arrived precisely when they were needed. Implementing this method within our installation programme had a very positive impact on the overall project.

Maintaining project timelines through team collaboration

Having early engagement with all parties involved was critical to maintaining timelines. We engaged with B+K design teams early on to make sure all details on the façade were co-ordinated with other trades. Early design from Stofix allowed us to ensure all interfaces with our aluminium design items were co-ordinated and fully checked. This meant that once on site, they all fitted with very little adjustment required, saving a significant amount of time.

Prioritising communication throughout the project allowed us to monitor all aspects of the installation to ensure the project ran and completed on time. Every aspect and sequence of the installation was carefully planned before work on site started. Once work began, on site teams could focus on implementing the plans and progressing forward.

“The whole team, including client and stakeholders are delighted with the new EdCity office building. All have expressed how impressively it sits within the project and clearly the Stofix façade, expertly installed by Caxton Facades plays a large part in the impressive vista. The detailing and close attention to installation tolerances is integral to the sharp appearance of the Stofix brick slip façade.”

Driving efficiency through innovation

Using the Stofix pre-pointed brick slip system helped us give our client a major programme saving. With the Stofix system being pre-pointed the benefits to the whole project were clear to see as areas could be completed quickly. Plus, the quality of the panels produced from Stofix were always of the highest quality”.
