Brandon Bates
Meet Brandon, a first-year bricklayer apprentice at Caxton Academy. Brandon tell us how six-week block learning at Caxton has given him invaluable early on-site experience.
Why did you want to become a bricklayer?
I knew I wanted to become a bricklayer as my dad, brother, and other family members were in the trade. I liked the idea of being outdoors, staying physically active, and earning money. I was originally working with my dad and my brother and I started when I was 16 years old.

Why did you choose Caxton Academy?
Caxton Academy courses exceed government standards, offering small class sizes of just 6–10 students and personalised one-to-one support from experienced tutors. Our six-week intensive block learning approach replaces traditional day release, helping us gain the knowledge and confidence to go on site in just six weeks. Caxton also offers an optional third year, attended by 95% of apprentices, to support our transition into full time employment.
How long have you been with Caxton?
I am a first year apprentice and I have been with Caxton for about a year and a half. It’s been a great experience so far.

What sites and types of work have you done so far at Caxton?
I have worked on projects including Rye Hill Prison, Edward Street Hospital, Birmingham Eastside, and Glasswater Locks. My work so far has involved blockwork and brickwork.
What is the best part of your job and working for Caxton Group?
For me, it’s the opportunity to be trusted to work independently on sites. The on-site teams help me progress my skills and learning.
Best advice you have received, or would give?
Don’t waste time and mess around. Stay focused at college as it will help you in your career. A bricklayer apprenticeship is the best way to learn and gain hands-on experience. Work hard, and your earnings will significantly increase.
What are your future plans?
I want to stay in the building trade for many more years as a bricklayer and eventually start my own business.
