Why our Academy is different

With expert tutors, hands-on training, small class sizes, and an emphasis on early site experience, we are creating the next generation of highly skilled bricklayers ready to meet the demands of the construction industry. The Academy’s unique approach improves learning, increases retention and success rates, with many apprentices going on to enjoy a successful career at Caxton Group.

Setting a Higher Standard in Apprenticeship Training

The ST-0095 Standard is a government-backed course that replaced the NVQ approximately four years ago. The ST-0095 bricklaying apprenticeship at Caxton Academy goes above and beyond the required government standards.

We also offer an optional third year – one of the most valuable aspects of our program and attended by 95% of our apprentices.  Between months 3 and 9 of this period, we see significant growth in our apprentices – they refine their skills, gain confidence, and adjust to the realities of the working world.

Experienced tutors and 1-2-1 mentoring

Our lead tutor, Ivan Sharpe brings over 40 years of industry experience, having worked as an apprentice, bricklayer, site manager, and contracts manager. His extensive knowledge across various construction projects ensures apprentices receive the best possible training.

Additionally, Ivan organises field trips to manufacturing facilities, along with guest presentations from suppliers and sponsors to enhance the overall learning experience.

Small Class Sizes for Personalised Learning

We maintain class sizes of just 6-10 students to provide individual support. This allows tutors to offer one-on-one guidance, particularly in practical sessions.

Smaller classes also mean tutors can identify struggles early, correct techniques, and ensure a positive learning environment. The result? Higher engagement and better skill development.

Block Learning: Faster Skill Development

Traditional day-release programs don’t offer enough time for apprentices to develop hands-on skills. Our six-week block courses allow students to practice daily, helping them master essential skills such as spreading, pointing, and laying much faster. By the end of six weeks, our apprentices reach a skill level that typically takes nine months in a traditional program.

Block learning allows apprentices to build stronger relationships with peers and tutors, making them more comfortable and engaged in their training. The ability to repeat and refine skills daily ensures they retain knowledge and progress faster.

Early On-Site Experience

Sending apprentices on-site early significantly benefits their learning. A student with basic bricklaying skills is more likely to be given hands-on opportunities, whereas an inexperienced apprentice may be assigned to labouring task or just to observe.

Building confidence early in the course will encourages curiosity, making site teams more willing to mentor them while promoting safety awareness, helping apprentices understand workplace hazards and responsibilities. For school leavers with no prior work experience, this hands-on exposure is invaluable in building confidence and industry knowledge.
