Caxton Builders: Houlton School
Caxton Builders worked alongside main contractor Morgan Sindall on Grade II-listed historical site, Houlton School. The refurbishment and new build project won the award for ‘Refurbishment’ at the Brick Awards 2022. The judges commented, “This restoration and renovation has been done in a very exciting and unique way. The revitalisation of the former transmitter creates an entirely distinctive brick campus for the new school at the heart of Houlton, carrying the heritage of the Radio Station into the future”. Rugby Radio Station
Warwickshire-based Houlton School is located on the grounds of the Rugby Radio Station, which was established in 1928. At the height of its power in the mid-20th century, the station was the largest in the world and in 1927 the site transmitted the first transatlantic radio signal. The station was phased out between 2003 and 2007, and it became a Grade II-listed site on the National Heritage List for England in February 2005.
Preserving original building
Van Heyningen and Haward Architects created the plan that transformed the former Rugby Radio Station power building and its water tower, adding three new teaching blocks. The former power room was converted into an assembly hall and canteen and retained many of its original features. The roof was removed, the walls retained and a steel frame was inserted to create additional floors within the building. The project restored the façades of the listed building while preserving the industrial character of the main internal spaces.
Richard Coppell, development director for Urban&Civic, said, “The transformation of this landmark building is a welcomed signal of progress and optimism for the local community who are rightly excited about the unique and inspiring school for their children”.
Michael McCulley, Principal added “We have the privilege of occupying the Grade II historic listed buildings that previously housed Rugby International Radio Station. Inspired by our heritage, we enjoy our very own Communications Centre, fully resourced with a library and professional radio and television broadcasting station, allowing us to continue the historic legacy of our campus”.
