Preserving history and building a community – Caxton Builders install a time capsule at Leicestershire school

A unique time capsule journey

Caxton Builders worked with main contractor, Willmott Dixon to build Hollycroft Primary School, Normandy Way, in the heart of Leicestershire. We recently returned to the school to assemble a time capsule – a tangible representation of our commitment to leaving a lasting impact and fostering community connection.  Ivan Sharpe, Construction Manager at Caxton Builders commented, “We’ll be returning once again in October for the final step – burying the capsule and preserving a moment in time. Apprentice Harvey Campling and I will be on-site representing Caxton Builders and we look forward to marking this special day with the community.”

Symbolic silver bricks

The silver bricks surrounding the capsule’s location represent the Silver Jubilee, signifying the moment when it will be unearthed – 25 years from now. They’ve chosen to preserve a snapshot of this time period for future generations to discover and reflect upon.

Innovative sustainability

Hollycroft Primary School goes beyond conventional learning spaces; it embodies modern construction practices prioritising sustainability and energy efficiency. In the same way that main contractor, Willmott Dixon’s innovative approach to building design prioritises the future, a well-considered time capsule can also serve as a bridge between the present and the future.

Willmott Dixon Director Nick Heath said: “All over the country, buildings of old have not been designed with the future in mind, and this is where our pioneering approach is reinventing standard”. This time capsule is a way to ensure that our memories, aspirations, and cultural touchstones are preserved for generations yet to come.

A celebration with the community

Ivan continued, “As we approach the day of burying the time capsule in mid-October, we’re looking forward to sharing this moment with the Mayor and other guests from the Normandy Way Community. Hollycroft Primary School is more than bricks and concrete – it’s a symbol of our shared dedication to excellence and a sustainable tomorrow”.
