Phoenix Cinema & Arts Centre Leicester

We’re delighted to announce another project award for Caxton Builders for our valued client, Willmott Dixon. Our team will commence works at Phoenix Cinema and Arts Centre in Leicester in June 2024, with a 32 week programme duration. The project consists of replacing the existing brick façade, insulation and ancillary items, and installation of fire barriers to comply with the current Building Safety Act. The project has a value of £967K.

Stringent modern standards required by law

Phoenix Cinema and Arts Centre is part of Phoenix Square, a mixed-use building, with residential apartments and business units. Leicester City Council applied to Homes England’s Building Safety Fund for money to carry out the work, and was awarded £14million in November from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities scheme.

Leicester deputy city mayor for climate, economy and culture, Cllr Adam Clarke said: “This Government-funded work is being carried out due to a change in legislation following the Grenfell Tower tragedy – not because of any particular risk at Phoenix Square itself. This funding means the new cladding will meet the stringent modern standards required by law”.

Heart of the Cultural Quarter

Leicester’s Phoenix cinema and art centre has been a prominent part of the city’s Cultural Quarter since it moved to its current home in 2009. Phoenix boasts four screen cinemas, superb new galleries, and a stylish Café Bar, plus a fabulous roof terrace and more spaces for making and learning. It’s all part of their ambition to make inspiring film and art available to all.

Willmott Dixon project commences

Main contractor, Willmott Dixon has commenced remedial / refurb work ahead of our teams joining in June. Due to new fire regulations the whole façade is being stripped before Caxton Builders build the new masonry façade, with all new insulation and fire barriers.
