Project update Caxton Builders: Riverside Gardens, Shrewsbury

Brickwork is continuing to take shape at Riverside Gardens in Shrewsbury, where Caxton Builders is delivering the masonry package for valued and long-standing client, Morgan Sindall.

The project forms part of a major regeneration programme led by Shropshire Council, creating a new public park designed to better connect the town centre with the River Severn. The development will strengthen links between The Darwin Shopping Centre, Roushill and Raven Meadows, helping to create a more accessible and welcoming environment for the local community.

Feature brick arches taking centre stage

A key visual feature of the project is the installation of standout brick arches, manufactured off site by IG Masonry Support. These architectural elements highlight the importance of early collaboration and careful coordination across the design, manufacture and installation stages.

Off-site manufacture has supported efficient installation on site, while maintaining the high level of precision required to achieve the intended visual impact. The arches are set to become a defining feature within the finished scheme.

Early engagement, detailed planning and a shared commitment to quality between all project partners have played a vital role in the successful delivery of this stage of the works.

Supporting a major town centre transformation

Preparatory work to demolish and clear the site, along with construction of the new park, has been supported by £18.7 million of government funding awarded in 2023.

Once complete, the new public space will offer:

  • Improved links between key town centre locations
  • Landscaped green areas designed to enhance biodiversity
  • Increased flood resilience
  • Activity spaces for families
  • A dedicated events and performance area

The park is expected to open to the public in late autumn 2026.

Delivering quality through collaboration

As progress continues on site, Riverside Gardens is becoming a visible example of how thoughtful design and strong partnerships can elevate traditional brickwork into a defining architectural feature.

“The collaboration between IG Masonry Support, Morgan Sindall and our team has been invaluable, and reaching the recent milestone of successfully installing the five feature archways was a proud moment for everyone involved. The archways have already attracted a great deal of positive attention from passers-by and are a real testament to the skill and dedication of the team on site. I’d like to thank everyone for their outstanding efforts and commitment throughout the project so far.” Todd Wilkinson, Assistant Site Manager, Caxton Builders.

“Riverside Gardens will provide a beautiful and inclusive new space for people of all ages to enjoy and take a moment out of their busy lives.  It will also serve as a new destination for outdoor community events, with a play area that’s perfect for young families.” Rob Wilson, Shropshire Council’s cabinet member for transport and economic growth.

Caxton Builders is proud to support the delivery of a project that will create lasting value for the community and enhance the town centre environment.
