Two Caxton Academy apprentices shortlisted for ABC Apprentice of the Year

We’re incredibly proud to announce that Brandon Bates and Danny Wood, both apprentices at Caxton Academy have been shortlisted for the ABC (Association of Brickwork Contractors) Apprentice of the Year Award – a fantastic achievement that recognises their hard work, commitment, and progression within the trade.

Both apprentices have demonstrated exceptional dedication throughout their training, combining on-site experience with technical learning through Caxton Academy, and consistently going above and beyond what’s expected of them.

Brandon Bates – Building a future in bricklaying

Brandon began his journey into construction during his GCSE years, inspired by his father and brother, both experienced bricklayers. Wanting a career that was hands-on and varied, bricklaying quickly stood out as the right path.

“I knew I didn’t want a job where I was stuck indoors every day. I wanted something physical, where I could learn a skill and see what I’d built at the end of the day. Being able to help create buildings that benefit communities is something I’m really proud of.”

Since joining Caxton, Brandon has worked on major projects including Glasswater Locks, HMP Rye Hill, Edward Street Hospital and Camp Hill Lines, developing his skills across a wide range of brickwork techniques – from blockwork and structural walls to detailed feature brickwork.

Through Caxton Academy, Brandon has completed intensive training blocks, gaining both practical experience and theoretical knowledge. His tutor, Ivan Sharpe, has seen huge growth in his confidence and ability:

“When Brandon first started, he had limited experience and struggled with the theory side. But he never gave up. His determination, work ethic and willingness to learn have been outstanding. He’s grown massively – not just as a bricklayer, but as a person. He’s now confident, capable and a pleasure to work with.”

Looking ahead, Brandon hopes to continue developing his skills and eventually progress into a site management role, inspired by the leaders he’s worked alongside at Caxton.

Danny Wood – A natural talent with a strong work ethic

Danny joined Caxton with a clear ambition to build a career in bricklaying, enrolling at college before securing his apprenticeship. From the outset, his dedication and attitude set him apart.

“I’ve always known I wanted a career where I could be active, learn a trade and build something meaningful. Bricklaying gives me that, and I’m proud of the progress I’ve made so far.”

Danny has worked across several major sites including Prichatts Park, Glasswater Locks, Fosse Park, Hockley Mills and Molecular Science, gaining valuable experience in both traditional and complex brickwork.

His tutor and mentor, Ivan Sharpe, commented:

“Danny is one of the most committed apprentices we’ve had. His attitude, reliability and desire to learn really stand out. He takes pride in his work, supports others on site, and consistently delivers high-quality results. He’s a great role model for younger apprentices coming through.”

Danny’s college tutor also praised his development, highlighting his strong technical ability, attention to detail and willingness to go above and beyond – qualities that helped him complete his training ahead of schedule.

A proud moment for Caxton Group

Both Brandon and Danny represent exactly what Caxton’s apprenticeship programme is about: commitment, progression, and developing skilled tradespeople for the future of construction.

Their ABC Apprentice of the Year nominations are thoroughly deserved, and everyone at Caxton Builders and Caxton Academy is incredibly proud of what they’ve achieved so far.

We wish them both the very best of luck in the awards – and look forward to seeing their careers continue to grow.
